How do you do that? – Long, messy curls tutorial.

I like big hair. In fact, think I should have been born and raised in Texas. To me, there is no such thing as too much volume. Unfortunately I was born with massive amounts of baby fine hair. The more I want my hair to go up…the more it lies flat to my head. So over the years I have taught myself tricks to make my hair LOOK as thick as it feels.

The way I curl my hair has evolved over the years. I remember waking up early in third grade and waiting patiently outside my mom’s bathroom, so she could put my hair in old school hot rollers. That transitioned into a full head of tight ringlets, sprayed to death with aqua net. Now, the messier the better. Jessie James Decker is one of my hair icons. She looks like she walked out of the ocean and her hair dried in gorgeous, super long beachy waves, 100% of the time. I’m not quite there yet. But I did create a video tutorial for you (scroll to the bottom). I don’t know how those fancy YouTube girls do it…I look completely awkward and ridiculous but it will help give you a visual. My kids make a surprise visit in the video, as they always do when I try to get ready. That’s another reason why I don’t get around to washing and styling my hair all that often.

Some common questions I get:

How often do you cut and color your hair?
During the warmer months, I keep my hair super blonde so it needs to be touched up more often. I go in about every 6-8 weeks for highlights. Currently, I have a darker chestnut ombre color. Because my roots are closer to my natural hair color, I can go quite a long time in between colors touch ups. Usually about 12 weeks. In terms of cutting, it takes my hair a very long time to grow so I probably haven’t trimmed it in over a year. I can get away with this because I use really high quality shampoo and I don’t wash/brush my hair very often. That helps keep my ends in good condition.

How do you go so long without washing your hair?
This definitely takes some training. You have to teach your hair what you want it to do. I attribute mine to finding several shampoo/conditioners that are high quality and work with my hair type. I always wash my my hair twice when I am in the shower. Once to clean it, and a second time activate the product. Then I condition, then apply a leave in treatment to repair and strengthen my hair. It seems like a lot of steps but I don’t do it often so I plan ahead. I also think dry shampoo is the holy grail of hair products and start adding it slowly to my scalp on day three. Then I adjust my hairstyle throughout the week, usually ending with a high, messy pony on the last day. And once again, even though I may not wash my hair every day…yes, I still take a shower every day people!

Do you wear extensions?
Yes. But not in this photo. I would wear them every day if I could but they take longer to put in than I am willing to spend in the morning. They are pretty magical though and I am thinking about doing a post on how I style them.

Here are the goodies I used in this tutorial. Click on the product to go straight to the site for purchase!

Other than that, it’s really all about practice! And if it turns into a fail, it won’t be something a little shampoo can’t fix…in a week of course.
